What is included in a typical renovation cleanup service in Ottawa?

A typical renovation cleanup service in Ottawa follows a structured, multi-phase process that goes well beyond a regular house cleaning. Understanding what should be included helps you evaluate quotes accurately and ensures nothing gets missed. A proper renovation cleanup covers everything from bulk debris removal through to a final detail clean that leaves the space genuinely move-in ready.

The Three Phases of Renovation Cleanup

The first phase is rough cleaning, which tackles the heavy lifting while construction may still be wrapping up. This includes removing all construction debris such as drywall scraps, wood offcuts, tile pieces, packaging materials, and general waste. Rough cleaning also involves bulk dust removal from all surfaces using industrial-grade equipment, sweeping and shovelling of larger debris, and an initial wipe-down of walls and ceilings. Ask whether sorting and hauling debris is part of the service and where it goes — the City's Trail Road landfill does not accept asbestos, hazardous waste, liquid waste or commercial garbage.

The second phase is detailed cleaning, which is where commercial-grade equipment makes a real difference. This includes HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces, walls, ceilings, and floors to capture fine construction dust that a regular vacuum can recirculate. Light fixtures, outlet covers, and switch plates are wiped clean. Interior windows are washed on both sides, and all glass surfaces including mirrors and shower doors are cleaned to remove paint overspray, tape residue, and construction film. Countertops, cabinets inside and out, shelving, and all millwork are thoroughly cleaned. Bathroom fixtures including toilets, sinks, tubs, and shower enclosures are scrubbed and sanitized. All door frames, baseboards, trim, and hardware are wiped down.

The third phase is the final detail clean, which addresses everything that the first two passes revealed. This includes spot-treating any remaining adhesive residue, paint drips, or grout haze on tile. Floors receive their final cleaning treatment appropriate to the material, whether that is damp-mopping hardwood, scrubbing tile and grout, or machine-cleaning vinyl. All appliances are cleaned inside and out if they were present during the renovation. Air vents and returns are vacuumed and wiped, though full HVAC duct cleaning is usually a separate service and is worth asking about after a major renovation.

Quotes for cleanup after a kitchen or bathroom remodel in Ottawa can run roughly $400 to $1,500 depending on scope, and a whole-home project costs more. Ask each company for proof of liability insurance and what it covers, and ask whether they have WSIB coverage or a clearance certificate. Always get a few itemized written quotes that specify exactly what is included in each phase.
